Batteries for Life: Help Us Fight Type One Diabetes

by Kiley Schiffman Storrs

October is Diabetes Awareness Month, and at Schiffman’s, Type 1 Diabetes is one disease we’re determined to try to stop. In honor of Diabetes Awareness Month, Schiffman’s is proudly partnering with JDRF to help find treatments, preventions, and ultimately, a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes isn’t preventable. It can suddenly strike children and adults alike, and it occurs when the pancreas can’t produce insulin. This means that diabetes management is a life-long journey that includes blood glucose management, exercise, and proper nutrition. It’s not an easy journey, either. Those same statistics show that less than one-third of those with this type of diabetes are able to consistently achieve proper blood-glucose control levels.

Statistics from the American Diabetes Association prove that diabetes is an epidemic. For example, someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 19 seconds. For type 1, it’s one of the highest health problems for kids next to asthma. And right now, approximately 1.25 million Americans are living with type 1 diabetes. It’s also believed that 5 million Americans will have this type of diabetes by 2050.

As these numbers grow, JDRF also estimates that each year, approximately $14 billion is lost in income due to type 1 diabetes-associated healthcare expenditures.

That’s why we want to take a stand against this disease. During the full month of October, when you make any donation to the JDRF through Schiffman’s, we’ll replace your watch battery for free.
