Historical moments in Reed & Barton Silversmiths' past

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

Reed & Barton Silversmiths is one of the oldest silversmiths in America today. Dating back to 1824, it's small wonder if the company's history had interspersed with historical milestones at some point. Take for example in the first world war, when Reed & Barton Silversmiths was tasked to produce stainless steel flatware for soldiers. You've probably seen a Reed & Barton Silversmiths in one of many World War I photos showing soldiers eating in between combat. Similarly, was also assigned the role to design and produce the medals in the Atlanta Olympics of 1996. The company also redesigned the Davis Cup, one of the major tennis tournament icons. If you own a Reed & Barton Silversmiths, you have history in your favor or, perhaps, an Olympic-level quality utensil for tonight's dinner.

More than that Thing You Put in your Mouth

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:15:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

Reed & Barton Silversmiths is more than just a collection of fine sterling silver spoons, forks, and knives. It's a collectible set of cutlery and utensils inspired by art, heritage, and style. For example, the Reed & Barton Silversmiths Thomas O'Brien collection exhibits the artist's “warm modernism,” a fusion of classic comfort and vanguard middle-of-century lines that lend to this set a subtle elegance. The collection is easily a preferred choice by collectors and people with a literal taste for luxury. Likewise, the Williamsburg by Reed & Barton Silversmiths exudes colonial America with a reinterpretation of Colonel Williamsburg's dinnerware collections. These items showcase eighteenth-century decorative traditions. More importantly, parts of the proceeds from this collection help support the preservation, promotion, and research projects of the nonprofit Colonel Williamsburg Foundation.

Silver Act

Posted by Schiffman's at 10:00:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

Silverware like Reed & Barton Silversmiths is perfect as a display set or dinnerware for formal occasions at home like baptisms, engagements and hosted cocktails. As a display, the gleaming unblemished silverware adds an accent to a matte interior or wooden theme. The silver gloss, for instance, breaks the monotonous earthen ambiance of a stonewashed wall. A good technique is to put silverware pieces on wooden cupboards or inside firewood cabinets with glass panels to highlight the opposing texture. As a dining set, silverware like pitchers, fruit stands, chargers and candlesticks can dignify a simple table and, in fact, singularly elevate the overall ambiance of the table even if you’re using mediocre utensils and plates. But don’t overuse silverware. Its main role is to provide accent, not overwhelm the whole show.

More than Just Material Remains

Posted by Schiffman's at 6:00:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

The past is all around us. Almost every society that has developed over the past 4,000 years has made an attempt to preserve its history in some form or another. But the historic environment is more than just a matter of material remains – for heritage is important mainly because the spirit and direction of the nation are founded upon and reflected on those that cannot be touched.  It is in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the religions we follow, and the skills we learn. Some of us may not have money or property to give to our children when we die, but we can give a rich heritage to them. We can offer a heritage that will enhance their lives in every good way that we desire for them. That is why at Reed & Barton Silversmiths, heritage is not only what we touch and see, but most of the time it is intangible, felt and continued by amazing memories and treasures that are preserved in exquisite varieties of silver.

Big group big impression

Posted by Schiffman's at 4:00:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

If you’re hosting a big group, you’ll need reinforcement for bigger servers and trays. The Reed & Barton Silversmiths casseroles, bakers and chafing dishes do their duties as reliable food servers to your large group of guests. And they do it in style: fine sterling silver and stainless steel craftsmanship that Reed & Barton Silversmiths is known for. The Kingston casserole is anything but utilitarian; its classic lines and elegant handle are almost pieces of art. The English Gallery Covered Baker and Casserole is equally elegant and functional, too, for big groups. The side panels are etched with detail marks that add beauty to these items. Similarly, the Queen Anne Chafing Dish makes your buffet table look like an art gallery. The burner and slender pot are accented by intricate legs that create a delicate touch to this item.

Supporting actors

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:55 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

They are the supporting actors to your dining set. Trays, servers and bowls take a backseat to the dashing dish plates and flatware and centrepieces, but, like a backdrop, these supporting actors do complete the set. The Reed & Barton Silversmiths’ bowls, platters and trays surely play their roles to the tilt, even running too close to stealing the limelight from the main players. The Arbor Elm Leaf Bowl, for one, is symmetrically alluring and gleaming as it teases the eyes—“Take me, take me.” Similarly, its Bread Tray is slender and attractive in its water-flowing edges. The Bamboo Garden Round Tray also has a trick up its sleeves. The sterling silver handles are subtle, but they provide an exquisite accent to the wooden board. Reed & Barton Silversmiths has more of these supporting actors that are ready to display their beauty spot on.

What is simple is most beautiful

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

It uses simple strokes and monochromatic colors, but the result is elegant and artistic. The Reed & Barton Silversmiths porcelain dinnerware line serves in a platter the axiom that what is simple is most beautiful. The Austin Floral design achieves depth using various shades of indigo and ivory. The hue singularity exudes a classical feel, highlighted by gradients and color saturations to create the floral scenes. The berries, leaves, stems and butterflies are unified in monochrome, yet each creates its apparent movement, delicately touched by the artist’s deft hands. The idea is to complete the Reed & Barton Silversmiths floral dinnerware in one color to heighten the monochrome flavor.  Collecting all Austin Floral items, including dinner plates, platters, saucers, pitchers and cups, is a taste of art as it is for value.

Complex reduced to simple

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

There is an air of simplicity in a Reed & Barton Silversmiths five-piece place set, the rare talent that can reduce the complex processes of metal craft into a seamless, elegant piece. The curvature of a Reed & Barton Silversmiths spoon’s concave, for example, is subtle. The food slides smoothly on it and lips subconsciously crave to be kissed by the spoon’s generous rim. The knife gives off the right balance that allows you to cut into meat in surgical strokes. The fork is elegantly pointed to give you control when picking food. The Reed & Barton Silversmiths place sets come in a variety of designs; from Captiva set’s overlapping metal flaps that resemble a palm tree’s bark, to the ridged edge of the Berkshire-Matte set.
