Blend To The Bone

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Necklaces can make or break an ensemble, and their necessity can sometimes require major effort. Few can say, “I’ve got the ONE.” You know, that one statement piece that can cross over into any fashion trend thrown its way. If you don't have that ONE, then keep reading because you could and should.

Giving your neck elegance that can elevate a casual event without standing out too much is often the hardest struggle. Thankfully designers like John Hardy know exactly how to drape dreamy necklaces perfect for any occasion. Most likely you’ll only need one in the entire Bamboo Collection, and a great recommendation would be the Brushed Bib Necklace. But nobody would argue if you grabbed another!

Let’s say you choose the Brushed Bib though. Nobody needs to tell you, because you’ll definitely notice yourself, but you’re going to be stunningly ready for anything wearing this. A sterling silver chain is home to more sterling silver and 18k gold charms that show a festive, tribal, and contemporary look. The charms are balanced, yet abstract in their placement with insignias which are sure to mystify.

Bone-like charms lay across the chest in a wonderful arrangement, providing many layering ideas. Of course you could just let the all-natural materials touch your skin. The things you can do with this amazing necklace are endless and absolutely up to you. Just as is the decision to purchase such an elegant trend transcendent necklace. So who’s stopping you?

John Hardy Bamboo Twisted Hoop Earrings

Posted by Schiffman's at 2:43:44 PM in John Hardy (35)

John Hardy was founded in Bali in 1975, based on the premise of delivering quality as well as meaning and beauty. Each piece is hand crafted and designed with the goal of communicating meaning from the artisan to the buyer, and no piece does this better than the Bamboo Twisted Hoop Earrings.

Made from sterling silver and plated with black rhodium, these earrings are timeless and elegant. Made to look like bamboo, these earrings are lined and notched with the distinctive segments of the plant they're modeled after. And at 33.5 millimeters in diameter, these studs promise not to weigh down the wearers earlobes or stretch out their piercing. In fact, these earrings promise to be perfect for even the most sensitive ears, with both their size as well as their composition, as sterling silver is famous for being gentle on those with picky piercings. With its dark and subtle color, John Hardy's Bamboo Twisted Hoop Earrings are absolutely perfect for any outfit or occasion, from daily wear to any formal event they may be needed for.

Simple, hand-crafted, and elegant, John Hardy has created a pair of earrings no one could resist. From someone looking to upgrade their style to anyone looking for their next piece to add to their collection, these earrings are perfect.

John Hardy Modern Chain Band Ring With Diamonds

Posted by Schiffman's at 10:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Since 1971, John Hardy has been creating jewelry with the passion and master tools of an artist and sculptor. Since establishing his company, Hardy's jewelry can be found at many major retailers, as well as his own website. One of his major collections that has gained him great recognition is his modern chain series.

Made for both men and women, the modern chain series is inspired by the landscape of Bali and uses linking chain technology for jewelry that is strong as well as beautiful. These pieces are usually made of 18kt white or yellow gold and encrusted with gems. They are truly a staple of elegance in the jewelry market. One piece in this collection that is especially beautiful is the band ring with diamonds.

Measuring at 8.5 mm wide, the chain ring is made of 18kt gold and gives a braided appearance. Each braid section is encrusted with white diamonds. The entire ring screams of taste, as it sparkles gorgeously with gems but retains an understated structural design. It is a dainty band that sits effortlessly on a lady's finger but is also structurally sound and undeniably elegant. Its simple design also allows it to be easily paired with other jewelry and a multitude of fashions. It is a fabulous investment for any lady of grace and sophistication.

John Hardy Bamboo Pendant with Black Diamonds

Posted by Schiffman's at 11:04:53 AM in John Hardy (35)

The gorgeous cluster of black diamonds is a luxury that no competitor can match. The shine of 18 karat gold shaped like bamboo, coupled with extremely rare black diamonds is priceless, and the perfect gift for your tasteful mate. When she goes to her dinner party, all the ladies will stare in awe.

The necklace is a single column of fine gold. At the end of the gold is a sparkling mound of black diamonds. Black diamonds are amazing. They are also known as carbanados. Natural carbanados are found mostly in Latin America. As you gaze at your delightful treasure, the finery of your purchase will happily rest in your mind.

The column of fine gold speaks of exquisite taste and jewels harvested from the depths of a dangerous coal mine. You have at the edge of this necklace the most expensive and rarest form of coal, the black diamond. Black diamonds are exactly the carbon based glory that you need to make that great impression at your next big event.

Matching jewelry as a couple

Posted by Schiffman's at 10:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Having matching jewelry as a couple should not stop at engagement and wedding. How about continuing the tradition throughout your marriage? Matching jewelry can make your bond as a couple stronger.  Sure, it’s just for the show, but symbols are a powerful everyday visual trigger that reminds you your special bond together. However, feel free to move away from white diamonds and platinums when jewelry matching as a couple. You can go for the same brand even with different collections. For instance, John Hardy for men offers bold and classic cuffs, necklaces, and rings. The guy can match these items with her John Hardy bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces, and cuffs and coils. Even if the men’s and women’s collections look differently, they are “spiritually” connected by the John Hardy Asian-European fusion style.

Emma’s fave jewelry?

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Emma Watson has been spotted in New York wearing a John Hardy bracelet. The Harry Potter actress and UN Women Global Ambassador was seen donning a two-toned Classic Chain Bracelet by John Hardy, the Bali-based jewelry brand known for fusing traditional art and European design for a unique signature. The Classic Chain is accented with diamonds and yellow gold and looks sophisticatedly glamorous with the actress’ white dress. The bracelet also complements Watson’s shoulder-length red hair and brown eyes. This isn’t the first time Hermoine has been observed wearing a John Hardy as she’s widely known an admirer of the jewelry brand. Aside from the Classic Chain, John Hardy is popular for its collections, such as: Bamboo, Dot, Legends Cobra, Legends Macan, Legends Naga, and Heritage.

Bamboo Jewelry

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

The John Hardy Bamboo Collection arguably best represents the signature’s message. Founded in Bali, Indonesia by a Canadian jeweler who fused European jewelry craftsmanship with folkloric Balinese arts and crafts, John Hardy embodies elegance while keeping a green message. It prides itself for creating products that are natural and eco-friendly using fair-trade practices. Such is the nature of bamboos—they can be made into elegant urbane products yet they are as natural as a raw material can be. The John Hardy Bamboo Collection, of course, isn’t made in bamboo, but the style is patterned after this elegant grass. The material is made from sterling silver accented with gemstones or diamonds. The bamboo-inspired pieces exude the fluid motion of bamboos swaying in the wind, while the ridges in the jewelry add a more natural look.

John Hardy becomes even more luxurious

Posted by Schiffman's at 12:00:15 PM in John Hardy (35)

John Hardy recently announced that the brand is transitioning from a “collection-based fashion jewelry” to an iconic luxury signature. The move was aligned with the introduction of the brand’s 2015 fall collections, which feature more gold and stone work that exude more opulence. “[The] brand has revisited the original icons of John Hardy and is working from their authenticity to edit, elevate, and modernize,” a press statement reported. However, the company said it will continue with the legacy of John Hardy’s artisan-inspired luxury creativity. A new interim creative director was installed to oversee the transitions, a company spokesman said. With the departure of the brand’s head designer for 16 years, Guy Bedirada--who is also a part owner--John Hardy is expected to be heading on direct competition with other luxury brands.

Cinta means love

Posted by Schiffman's at 2:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

What makes John Hardy jewelry even more impressive beyond its quality craftsmanship is the inspiration and story behind each piece. Take the Cinta. It reminds you of the rainforests of Bali, Indonesia; the mystic mist that envelopes this magical island on early mornings. More so, when you wear a Cinta, you have in your hands jewelry-making tradition that dates back to pre-Columbian times. Cinta means love in Balinese, the perfect term which John Hardy designer Guy Bedarida translated into an elegant jewelry collection. It features 18k gold with London Blue Topaz, which symbolizes tranquility and balance. The gemstone is  surrounded by sapphires, which represent joy and protection. Cinta is just one of the many John Hardy jewelry collections that combines European craftsmanship and Balinese traditional practices.

Guilt-Free Luxury

Posted by Schiffman's at 6:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

John Hardy has been making beautiful luxury jewelry since its inception in 1975 when the founder of the same name visited Bali and decided to mix traditional Balinese techniques and designs with his own Western and modern sensibilities. This created a brand that is truly unique in its offerings. But what’s another thing that is unique about John Hardy is that because of its strong roots in nature, it has been creating these wonderful pieces in a sustainable manner. The company has adapted the slogan “Greener Every Day”. Its ultimate goal is to continue to create beautiful pieces while being carbon neutral at the same time. It has been offsetting its advertising costs, electricity consumption and business travel by green programs such as their “Wear Bamboo, Plant Program” initiative. Also, as of August 2012, John Hardy has been using 100% recycled silver for all their designs.

The Palu

John Hardy has been a company that is known for its creative feats in jewelry. It is the most recognizable company that has melded eastern and western aesthetics successfully to create a new style that cannot be named by any other name but John Hardy. John Hardy has always been known for their sterling silver design that uses traditional Balinese jewelry-making techniques and patterns and adding touches of modernity. Currently, John Hardy has more collections in its arsenal. One of them is the Palu. It includes pieces such as a three row multi station bracelet that sports a lobster clasp; all in sterling silver. The collection also features battered surfaces – which are hand-hammered. This was inspired by the moon’s beautiful mottled façade

Cinta is Love

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in John Hardy (3)

Cinta means love in Indonesian. It is billed to be the rarest collection of John Hardy Haute Joaillerie. The creation of this collection started with John Hardy, the company’s founder asked Head Designer Guy Bedarida to create a special gift for his wife in 2002. Since then, it became a regular tradition that Bedarida designs pieces for John Hardy’s wife and others took note and began asking for their own pieces too. Each Cinta piece is unique as it is designed around a special shell or unusual stone that Bedarida has found during his travels. Bedarida is even known to play matchmaker with the pieces as he pairs them with the appropriate owner. The Cinta Collection houses pieces such as the Salatiga – a pendant of sterling silver and 18 karat gold that features a glassfilled Ruby clasped by a masterfully carved Naga, the cosmic dragon bringing happiness and prosperity.

How to be rich

Posted by Schiffman's at 12:00:00 PM in John Hardy (35)

It may be off to talk about how to become rich even with a low income in a jewelry site, but you’ll see the connection. First, start building wealth as soon as you get your first pay check. The earlier you start the more you’ll reap off compounding interest. Second, get a financial advisor. He or she can help you plan out your savings and investment goals based on your current income. Third, plan how you’ll use discretionary income to pay off debts or invest in assets. It’s not just measuring cost, but the value of things you buy. Buying jewelry for example can be a value-oriented purchase when you go for signature items like John Hardy. Not only do they last longer, they also project wealth and other intangible benefits like less depreciation rate.

The Naga Collection features fiery rubies set as the eyes of a dragon – a mythical creature of power and strength. The Classic Chain Collection displays the skill of weaving taken to another level. The Kali Collection boasts its fluid shapes, rounded forms and brilliant shine echoing the flows of the river.

The Unique Balinese Art of John Hardy

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:30:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

John Hardy’s Cinta collection reflects the signature’s relentless quest to capture the mystical and unique Balinese art and marry it to European elegance. It is not conscious of precious stones set in its jewelry line; or does it boast of the price apparent in its material of platinum, gold, and sterling. Rather, this collection, as with other John Hardy collections, focuses on the art. Cinta is Indonesian for “love,” and rightly so the jewelry items evoke passion and romance, even a sensual touch is lightly expressed. Its pink sapphires and diamonds are framed by two Nagas, confident and quiet in their grandeur. Each piece is handcrafted with no two pieces exactly the same. The Cinta collection is consistent with John Hardy’s unique line of jewelry items crafted in the mystic and elaborate culture of Balinese art.

Balinese Inspired

Posted by Schiffman's at 11:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Over three decades ago, a Canadian artist went to Bali to learn its mystic and serene culture. The same elements, John Hardy thought, could be integrated in his line of Bali-inspired jewelry. The jeweler was particular about the singular, seamless flowing line of his jewelry, a take on the harmonious spirit that pervades the Balinese life. It’s a cultural sensation that is carried in every John Hardy piece, from his necklaces to bracelets. But John Hardy is not all about this Southeast Asian island. He brought a European elegance to his art to create one of the world’s true fusions of east and west. Likewise, John Hardy creates his masterpieces using low-impact and environment friendly processing as a respect to his Balinese host island. Much of his works are handcrafted, a unique piece that you can own.

Hammered to Beauty

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Inspired by Bali’s diversity and beauty, John Hardy, with the team’s jewelry experts and designers, always work something beautiful out of the most bizarre ways of creating jewelry. Only using hammer with some precious metals, John Hardy creates a magnificent collection named Palu. The inspiration for the soft texture of the Palu collection's battered surfaces comes from the moon's beautifully mottled facade. Just as in the original days of this ancient technique, pieces of the Palu collection are still hand-hammered. Husband and wife teams of artisans partner to create the jewelry, with the wife holding the piece over the fire to soften the material and the husband hammers the metal to create the Palu finish. The intense creative process takes on the nuances of their relationships as their daily emotions come through in their work.

The Diverse Beauty of Bali

Posted by Schiffman's at 11:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Beauty comes in many forms and viewed in different perspectives. Beauty is universal and diverse, it can be found in shapes and lines of different dimensions, and it can be understood by everyone. It has many sources but its bounty is found in nature. In so many places, this beauty is in bizarre kind, exotic and surreal. A place with this kind of beauty, is Bali.

Bali is a province of Indonesia. The province covers a few small neighboring islands as well as the isle of Bali. The main island is located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country's 34 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island. It is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, and performing arts. Bali boasts one of the most diverse and innovative performing arts cultures in the world, with paid performances at thousands of temple festivals, private ceremonies, or public shows.

Bali has a lot to offer, its culture, arts, history and ecology. Paradise-like beaches surround the island and rich biodiversity is a natural setting for the inhabitants, things that are world-known. Balinese craftsmanship is also making a name in the jewelry industry by the name of John Hardy.

John Hardy jewelry was founded by Canadian designer and artist, John Hardy. His journey started after he visited Bali in 1975. He fell in love with its nature, crafts and arts. In that same year, he established his design studio and gradually developed into a large enterprise.

Using traditional Balinese techniques, John Hardy created many of the world’s most unique and exceptional jewelry collections. These are collections inspired by the flows and curves of water and the natural forms of flora and fauna. Some of his most exquisite collections are awe-inspired by the culture and tradition of Bali and the rich heritage of the province. His most adored pieces represent some of the Indonesian and South East Asian royalties. Using precious and semi-precious gemstones such as sapphire, topaz, emerald, ruby and citrine, he has produced jewelry pieces that combine reality and fantasy.

Timeless and sophisticated in their own right, each John Hardy collection possesses a beauty unique from the others. Bamboo, Bedeg, Classic Chain, Dot, Kali, Naga, Palu, Men’s and Children’s are some of these red carpet statement collections.

For his love of Bali and the nature surrounding it, John Hardy is deeply devoted in the creation of every piece. A lot of skill, time and dedication are cornerstones to produce a single breathtaking Balinese hand-crafted jewelry. But with these cornerstones should always be accompanied with love, so much love for Balinese arts and craftsmanship.

Resulting from this love is the birth of the Cinta Collection. The Cinta is the rarest collection of Haute Joaillerie. “Cinta” is the Indonesian word for “love” and the pieces are designed around a special shell or unusual stone found on Guy Bedarida’s world travels. Guy Bedarida is John Hardy’s Head Designer and through him, the Cinta is born.

Among the Cinta pieces are the Tears of the Dragon, earrings of 18 karat pink gold featuring a teardrop briolette of Rose de France suspended from a gold Naga and square-cut Moon Quartz. Rose de France is a member of the Amethyst family, distinguished by its pale lilac hue. The Naga is the cosmic dragon, symbolic of the life force that brings love, prosperity and protection. On top of the list is the Savu Volcano Orchid, a ring of 18 karat gold with Marble Cone Shell framed in a jeweled orchid motif and featuring a Spessartite center stone set in a pool of red and black Sapphires, red Spinels, and black Diamonds, like a cauldron of volcanic lava. Savu is a remote island in southeastern Indonesia, with an ancient animistic culture. Another favorite piece from the Cinta is the Kali Sila Rose, a ring made of 18 karat pink Gold set with Amethysts, Sapphires, and Diamonds in the John Hardy signature Kali motif. The random pebble shapes are inspired by the water-smoothed stones that line the rivers of Bali. Kali means "river." Sila is high Balinese for "stone."

Every John Hardy piece is a unique experience of Bali and every time you wear it is a display of the diverse beauty of what Bali has to offer. Traditional hand-crafted jewelry with the twist of contemporary designs interpreted in a soul-reaching way—beauty beyond beautiful, Bali that is, the John Hardy way.

The Naga Power

Posted by Schiffman's at 12:00:00 PM in John Hardy (35)

The dragon is probably the most universal of all mythical creatures.  In addition to Chinese dragons, there are nearly limitless tales of dragons in the whole world. In the orient, the Balinese believe in a mythological creature that symbolizes prosperity and good luck – which they call the Naga. In these legends, the Naga or the dragon is known as the lover of the pearl and must dive from his volcano-top home to sea to visit his love. Each morning when he returns, his path brings water through the rice fields. The water produces a bountiful rice harvest, supporting the Balinese farmer. This has come to symbolize strength, courage, fortitude, and an embodiment of primordial power.

Introduced in 2008 as the first figurative piece for John Hardy, the Naga collection brings to life the Balinese legend of the dragon. The collection includes meticulously handcrafted sterling silver and gold cuffs, earrings, bracelets, pendants and rings that are rich with precious and semi-precious gemstones all depicting the figurative dragon head or its scale motif.

The Best of Bali

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:30 AM in John Hardy (35)

Asian countries have the most diverse cultures in the world. India, Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and Thailand are the living and moving proofs of this diversity. In diversity, we find variation and with variation, we find colors and shapes. In colors and shapes, there are endless ideas of forms and swirls that make up a structure or a matter. Indonesia has one of the richest heritage among countries around the globe and though diversified in culture, Indonesia is a living paradise and it is well represented by the place called Bali.

John Hardy's creations are based on traditional techniques developed throughout centuries by Balinese craftsmen and equally inspired by local arts and ornaments. He’s a man who among others, fell in love with the good natured people and the paradise-like place of Bali.

John Hardy jewelry was founded by Canadian designer and artist, John Hardy. His journey started after he visited Bali in 1975. He fell in love with its nature, crafts and arts. In that same year, he established his design studio and gradually developed into a large enterprise.

His creations take Balinese tradition and techniques producing exotic and exceptional results that are remarkably lovely and artistic. The distinctive blend of antiquity enduring a modern design, poured into the molten metal creates unbelievable jewelry pieces. All pieces of John Hardy signature jewelry are made by hand; yet you immediately realize that one of the sources of the beauty of this metal work comes from balance and harmony that only human hands can instill. The natural forms and intricate lines that only human hands can give make his pieces like fruits from a tree, naturally bore and ripen by nature itself.

John Hardy’s passion, creativity and talent are driving forces behind this remarkable and extraordinary company. He refined the traditional Balinese jewelry technique called granulation (which involves the one-by-one application of tiny beads of metal) by flattening by hand traditional beads. This modified technique has become his signature "dot" pattern reminiscent of reflections of tropical gardens.

The above mentioned dot technique with silver or with both silver and gold, is used often across different collections and serves as the basis for some most sophisticated and beautiful pieces ever created by John Hardy such as his large pendant of circular discs of 18K gold with a distinctive rhythmic design found in the temple art of Cambodia. Set on a matching hand-carved silver chain with smaller medallions crafted with the same pattern and technique, it becomes suitable for many occasions. The rich and yet casual look of this masterpiece is hard to miss.

Some exquisite pieces come from the Cinta, the rarest collection of Haute Joaillerie. Cinta means love, and created with love and dedication, these pieces are exclusively made just for you.

The Singhasari Tangi is a piece featuring dancing spheres of lavender Jade suspended from floral motifs of flame-colored Spinels set with Diamonds. The Nature - Inspired Luxury

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:00 AM in John Hardy (35)

Great respect for nature. A philosophy we can rarely find in big enterprises and companies. Humans as we are, we care so much for what is modern and advanced, tending to forget to value and appreciate nature. We never realized that the most beautiful things in the world come in natural forms. John Hardy takes this challenge and created his jewelry inspired by nature. For him, nature is not expensive, it is priceless.

John Hardy jewelry is known for its designs in sterling silver and other precious and semi-precious gemstones and for using traditional Balinese jewelry-making techniques and patterns to create modern pieces.

It all started in 1975, John Hardy jewelry was established by Canadian designer and artist, John Hardy. He went to Bali in the mid-1970s and he was attracted to the island's jewelry-making traditions and ignited his interest. He began learning the techniques of the local artisans then developed his first pieces by applying new design concepts to traditional Balinese techniques.

In 1996, the John Hardy compound was built in Mumbal, Bali and is the company production center where the jewelry is created. It also serves as a living and gathering space with an organic farm and low impact buildings. In 1999, Guy Bedarida, a senior designer of haute joaillerie of the Place Vendôme, joined the company as Head Designer and expanded Hardy’s design concepts to include the use of classical European jewelry techniques and new motifs inspired by nature and ancient East Asian art styles and themes.

The time and efforts were paid off when a rare John Hardy’s breathtaking collection was completed: Cinta. Cinta means “love” and is the rarest collection of haute joaillerei. This includes the Singhasari Naga Majesty, a cuff of 18 karat gold featuring a Rubellite center stone framed by two Nagas set with pink Sapphires and Diamonds. The Naga is the cosmic dragon, bringer of love, prosperity and protection. Singhasari was a 13th century Hindu kingdom in Java. Rubellite was treasured by the last Dowager Empress of China, who was laid to rest on a pillow carved of this beautiful gemstone and the Sanjaya

Earrings of 18 karat gold featuring Citrines and orange Sapphires. The Citrine is said to promote positive energy, courage, and discipline. It is associated with the Sun and its ability to bring warmth and happiness. The Sanjaya dynasty ruled central Java from the 8th to the 10th centuries and built monumental Hindu temples.

The Cinta collection also includes Soka, Sighasari Tangi, Naga Harmony, Savu Sorcery, Storm Pelangi, Naga Wiram Wilis, Naga Tangi, Savu Water Lily, Savu Purple Orchid and many more.

Through the years, the company has observed its four core values: Authenticity, Transparency, Accountability and Diversity. Authenticity, to offer only original and authentic jewelry shaped with the finest materials possible to their loyal clientele. Transparency, to continue on their endeavor to be an environment friendly company without any hidden agenda jewelry line. Accountability, that they will be responsible for any consequence and answer for any misconduct of their employees and warrants all of their wearers of the quality and standards of its pieces and lastly, Diversity, that they will continue to provide wide selection of pieces where wearers and collectors can enjoy and choose from.

John Hardy’s good intentions towards nature has been rewarded that in 2007, John Hardy president and currently company CEO, Damien Dernoncourt with Head Designer and Creative Director, Bedarida, purchased the company from Hardy. That same year the company headquarters was moved to Hong Kong and a satellite office was opened in New York. In 2010, the company opened its first flagship store in Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta. In 2011, it opened its first men’s and lifestyle store at The Landmark, Hong Kong.

Since then, John Hardy’s legacy of environment friendly luxury has always been the commitment and driving force of the company.  John Hardy envisions itself to be recognized as a leading brand in luxury handmade jewelry and lifestyle accessories inspired by the essence of the earth; A green company with an endless journey of becoming greener every day.

The combination of nature, art, culture and tradition result to a John Hardy piece: exquisite, exotic and elegant. "John Hardy is a luxury brand of handmade designer jewelry that reflects a synergy of designer and artisan to create objects of beauty in an environment of respect for people and for the natural world," says Damien Dernoncourt, CEO for John Hardy.
