Porcelain Greatness

Posted by Schiffman's at 12:00:00 PM in Casafina (31)

Porcelain has been valued greatly throughout world history. There had been the greats and there had been those that just add clutter to the mix of porcelain producers. But what makes a producer great is not just the immediate beauty and use of its products. Greatness also involves the heritage, tradition and story that come with the piece. Casafina is one of those greats. It’s not just that Casafina creates wonderful and beautiful pieces to witness and u se but also that it connects the great craftsmanship traditions in the world. Casafina brings the ceramic hand-painting traditions of Italy and Portugal, tabletop and accent glassware from Romania and handcrafted metal-works from India. Beauty is but one thing. Putting meaning to it is what attaches the word genius to inanimate objects. This is something that Casafina just does naturally.

Tuscan dreamy morning

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

Remember the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun? Panorama of rolling hills, vineyards that stretch to the horizon, rich culinary delights and that Italian propensity for life. Based on Frances Mayes’ memoir, the film follows Diane Lane’s character, an American divorcee who went to a small Tuscan town to get some breathing space and her bearings. But instead of space and peace she got overwhelmed by the Italian way of life: the complexities of a young couple’s love; the struggles back home of a bunch of Polish immigrant carpenters working on her house; and her own flirtations with Italian men including her married landlord’s secret admiration of her. All these things come to my mind one early morning while preparing breakfast with my Casafina Indigo Collection. It’s Greek inspired, I know, but close enough to make me dream of pepperonis, wines and the simple pleasures and struggled in life.

Brighten up your meals

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

Stoneware and ceramics add charm to your dining set. They brighten up an already sunny morning or lighten up a gloomy afternoon. Nothing does this more than a Casafina line of hand painted ceramics. You have a wide selection to enliven a dreary table set. From flowers to fruits, leaves to fishes, Casafina ceramics are uniquely crafted apiece. One of the most elaborate designs, the Gala Collection features a rooster in a flower garden that is reminiscent of a children’s tale. The artist mixes the colors subtly with each one complimenting the others. You can feel the balance in tone, giving the whole collection a smooth natural impression. The Gala items include pitchers, platters and serving bowls. They are an excellent addition to your breakfast or late afternoon sets.

Handmade Heaven

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:55 AM in Casafina (31)

There are a lot of reasons why a lot of people would rather buy handmade. Some of us prefer the quality of handmade goods to cheap, manufactured alternatives, and see buying handmade as a way  of quietly protesting mass produced goods. I buy handmade because someone else is using their talents to create gifts and decor that I myself cannot make. Your gifts are the best on the block.  Cool, trendy, unique, and usually one-of-a kind, you can find some really awesome handmade stuff that’ll make everyone ask “Where can I get one?” When something is produced in a factory in China or Indonesia or Bangladesh, we don’t know who actually made it. There are so many reasons...but most importantly I love to know that something has been made with love, care and attention and I like to know who it was made by. In 1988, Donna and Samuel Smith began traveling to Portugal to create and manufacture Casafina’s beautiful and charming ceramics. Today, with their Forum Collection, Donna and Samuel features a new design featuring hand-formed “irregular” shapes embellished with a medieval coin in relief – indeed, they have truly continued to develop hand-painted, and hand-formed ceramics that is true to their beginnings.

Casafina turns metallic

Posted by Schiffman's at 5:45:00 AM in Casafina (31)

You won’t hear the signature porcelain “tink” in this Casafina collection, but “tink” still it is; that is, of metal. The brand has released its latest selection of home décor animal metal sculptures, handcrafted and hand-painted and adding an eclectic accent to your interior. The Metal Pig provides an ironic elegance; it looks like an element taken straight out of a pastel painting. Similarly, the Metal Rooster is captured in fable realism, like a real character taken out from a childish fairy tale. He is joined by a cacophony of more Plump Metal Roosters rendered in playful colors. Standing alone these roosters command attention; together, they create a joyful treat for both adults and kids. Meanwhile, the Metal Sheep is truly cartoony, yet the attention to details reveals this is no toy but a masterpiece. Completing the animal farm are the Large and Small Metal Cow and the Metal Owl.

It’s a Lemon

Posted by Schiffman's at 10:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

How do you wake up to a glorious sunny morning even in the dead of winter? Well, try setting the table with the Casafina Limoncello Collection. The hand-painted Portuguese stoneware maker releases a theme of lemons to give your morning a fresh Mediterranean scent, wherever you are. Simply looking at this Van Gogh-esque painted dinnerware ceramics elicits a happy feel. From the pitcher that can double as a vase—imagine setting it up with sunflowers to complete the aura of freshness—to the serving bowl and small ruffled bowl, the Limoncello is one refreshing design that lightens up even the bluest Monday. Dinnerware has never been this freshly scented. It’s almost like seeing the Casafina artisans whistling happy tunes or dancing in merry delight while creating these masterpieces.

Everyday’s a Sunny Dish

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

Hating to get up in a gloomy morning? The absence of sunlight weakens the body; it makes us lazy and makes us want to drape the blanket all over our body. Young and old alike feel the same way, a day without the bright sun is not a day at all. So what do we do? Aside from having a freshly brewed cup of coffee, always start the day right and bright with a hot meal on a sunny dish. Casafina Fine European Home & Table Decor will make everyday a sunny day with its sunny dish—a sensational combination of patterns, clays and colors of Olive and Cream stoneware from the Meridian Collection crowned with hand-painted terracotta from the Alentejo Sunflowers Collection. Say goodbye to gloomy days and hello to a brighter day, always with Casafina.

Oh, Corsica!

Posted by Schiffman's at 4:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

I can smell the sweet salty Mediterranean deep blue sea. The green Corsican hills flow behind me dotted by ceramic-tiled medieval villages. The cotton white clouds hover above as I enjoy a morning cup and hearty breakfast. I take my time knowing that the sun will be up the whole day and the white sand beach can wait for a while.  Looking out the window, I imagine waving to a school of yachts passing by my personal Corsica island; instead, the crowded traffic Chicago jam greets me back. Pity. The French Mediterranean bug always strikes me every morning when I use the Casafina Corsica Collection, fine ceramic ware that truly evokes the island’s flavor: rustic green, solid, "kissable" rims and the yellow earth tones, I will always dream of sipping freshly brewed coffee perched high in the Corsican cliff. I’m saving up to realize this dream. For now, I have the Casafina Corsica, the next best thing I guess to the real Corsica.

Complex vs. simple

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:15 AM in Casafina (31)

The beauty about Casafina ceramics is the flexibility it affords to the collector. Whether you opt for complex, intricate patterns or you prefer the simplicity of art, Casafina has both. The Fiorentino collection reveals a swirling mix of bold green and blue in deep tones, with each color further rendered across a wide gradient. The Galo line also has the fluidity feel to it, but the strokes are thinner and more subtle; yet the colors explode in stark hues of oranges, reds and blues amidst the blacks and green undertones. On the other end, Casafina expresses an elegant simplicity in its Marina dinnerware. The blue fish etched in linear strokes cannot be any more basic, but the lines still exude class. The Jacquard line also exhibits grace in simplicity; the set is awash in white with subtle markings of floral designs.

Thank you, art

Posted by Schiffman's at 1:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

“It’s a rooster,” I said. My wife was showing me a Casafina dish server. “It’s high-grade Portuguese stoneware,” she countered, putting my lack of sophistication in place and her eyebrows meeting each other. Of course, even in the vegetative state of my I.Q. about ceramics, I could see the Casafina Rooster Dish piece is quality made, not the kind you see in the supermarket. I just couldn’t express it and I went literal. I must admit the rooster is pretty detailed. “It reflects a Van Goghnisque style,” I said as a mighty comeback. I remember my art class, at least, and I can appreciate the Casafina rooster rendition truly can level off with a Van Gogh painting. The swirling bluish tones, the fluidity of the whole thing. “Glad you like it,” my wife said. Glad I love art, I thought, saving me from my wife’s wrath.

Festive dining

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

Add color to your dining set with the Casafina Flowers collection. It is Casafina’s vibrant take on floral explosion inspired by the flowers of Alentejo, Portugal. The set is hand-thrown and hand-painted, the trademark of a Casafina fine ceramics. It is a fiesta feel of red, orange and yellow flowers and all hues in between. The dark blue undertone sets a blissful foundation, where the yellow-greenish leaves stage a basic backdrop to the happy flowers. The items are rimmed by a chain of tiny red flowers that randomly run around the plate, serving tray, soup bowl and salad plate. The theme also includes pitchers and mugs for a complete set of festivity on your dining table. The Casafina Flowers collection is a celebration of meals, a take on the light and easy breeze by the ocean.

Glass for your ceramics

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

The signature may be known for hand-painted Portuguese stoneware, but it has one more art up its sleeve: glass. The Casafina glassware collection is as stunningly creative and delicately crafted as its ceramics cousins. The Casafina glass is a fitting complement to the stoneware, the vulnerable touch to the pottery's hardened stance. Casafina glassware displays elegant curves, detailed engravings and solid bases. They can be as simple as a flowing, unblemished slender glass or complex as wine stems with crackled patterns. The glassware line has a wide array of items for serving drinks to utility glasses. They include: tumblers, goblets, wine glasses, carafes and pitchers. Thrown in a glass stirrer and you have a complete line of fine glassware made in true Casafina style and charm.

Bath fun

Posted by Schiffman's at 12:00:55 PM in Casafina (31)

Sardines are not the only genuinely must-have in Portugal. Collectors and people with a taste for artistic dinner sets also go for fine Portuguese stoneware by the Casafina brand. Hand painted and inspired by the country’s traditional art of ceramic-making, Casafina exhibits an array of these sough-after ceramic masterpieces, not only in the dining table, but in the bath, too. The Casafina bath ceramics is an eclectic collection of soap dishes, toothbrush holders, tissue holders and dispensers rendered across playful patterns. The Blue collection evokes a beach lifestyle. The Green line soothes like a garden after rain. The Pink bath items evoke a feminine self-assurance. The Organic is uniquely earthbound, as the metal exudes strength without overpowering the senses. The whole line of Casafina bath themes ensures any interior design nuances are met in style.

A vast open sea of bluish green

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:25 AM in Casafina (31)

The variation in tone and hue of the Oceana collection by Casafina is testament to the handmade process involved in creating the Casafina stoneware. The Oceana’s colors of blue and green earth tones seem fused into the ceramic itself, resulting in the Casafina trademark of depth in character and individual signature. There is a relaxing ambiance about the Oceana collection, a diffused light that is evenly spread across its plates, mugs, bowls and saucers. Each item complements the one next to it, as if a whole set of Oceana sitting on your table is a continuous placid bluish green sea.  The feel is akin to looking out of your window in Lisbon’s old town to enjoy the summer breeze of the vast open ocean.

The Other Casafina

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

The signature may be known for finely handcrafted ceramics that exude charm, strength and beauty. The same characteristics are however evident in Casafina’s other impressive collection line: its glassware. The vases, candle holders, goblets and more complement the Casafina ceramics tabletop items. Handmade from Romania, the glassware creates a balance of luster and gentleness to the bold and earth colors of the ceramics. The Crackle Double Old Fashion glass reflects the glassmaking skills and artistic sensibility that come with a Casafina glassware. Contrast this to the simple yet elegant lines of Spiral Tumbler or the Optic Tumbler items. You can also feast your eyes on the lovely etches of grapes of a Casafina wine stem.  These are but a few of elegant glassware to match your Casafina ceramics collection.

A European celebration

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

There is warmth in ceramics. Perhaps it is Mother Earth’s bosom that emanates from a ceramic piece crafted from the mountain’s red clay and fired in high heat. Casafina dinnerware is one example, and the warmth extends to its hand painted designs. Crafted by artisans from Portugal and Italy, the Casafina art is European at the core with bold Tuscan sunflowers radiating from plates, bowls, and server trays. There is also a cornucopia of Mediterranean lemon illustrations laid calmly in a bowl or tray; or a simple take of a fish that radiates a Mykonos sea breeze, perhaps. It is a celebration of varied European themes across the Casafina collections, such as the Galo, Fiorentino, Jacquard, and Mezza Notte.

Lend your personal art collection

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

It’s a good advice to have the finest collection of dinnerware when having guests for dinner at home. When topics about the weather run out, it’s a good time to shift the conversation to the simple but elegant craftsmanship of a Casafina Corsica plate. Casafina is known for its European inspired home and table décor. Its Corsica line exemplifies the signature’s unique handmade art that produces a crackle finish and unglazed rims. Arouse your guests’ curiosity by revealing the art behind the Corsica line while you hold a plate, cup, and bowl and explain the play of glaze and natural rough around each item. There is an uneven feel to it that betrays the uniqueness of each Corsica ware. It is your personal art collection that you lend them even for a moment.
