Cinta is Love

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in John Hardy (3)

Cinta means love in Indonesian. It is billed to be the rarest collection of John Hardy Haute Joaillerie. The creation of this collection started with John Hardy, the company’s founder asked Head Designer Guy Bedarida to create a special gift for his wife in 2002. Since then, it became a regular tradition that Bedarida designs pieces for John Hardy’s wife and others took note and began asking for their own pieces too. Each Cinta piece is unique as it is designed around a special shell or unusual stone that Bedarida has found during his travels. Bedarida is even known to play matchmaker with the pieces as he pairs them with the appropriate owner. The Cinta Collection houses pieces such as the Salatiga – a pendant of sterling silver and 18 karat gold that features a glassfilled Ruby clasped by a masterfully carved Naga, the cosmic dragon bringing happiness and prosperity.

Unique Pieces, Unique Technique

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:30 AM in Annieglass (32)

Annieglass has been on its 30-year streak of designing award-winning glassware to its worldwide clientele. With its trademark look, it has made its mark in the luxury market and even had two sculptural pieces (Tiburon and Coquina) selected to be a part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2006. What separates Annieglass apart is the unique look of its pieces that are brought about by a unique process developed in-house. It is a glass bending technique that takes a sheet of flat glass and melts it over a ceramic mold. These sheets are fired at 1350F – such a high temperature that precious metals like 24-karat gold or genuine platinum permanently fuse to the glass. This technique deviates away from traditional hand blowing as it gives the glass a one-of-a-kind translucent texture finish but it also makes the pieces very durable.

If you have yet to feast your eyes on Annieglass pieces, you can pay us a visit at Schiffman’s in Downtown Greensboro.

The World of Fencing

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Tissot (38)

Timing is everything and in the world of fencing you can’t point this out any further. A fencer readies his angle and sets his foot firmly on the ground. He focuses on his opponent, viewing him not just a part of his body, but his whole movement from head to toe. He measures his competitor’s angle and his the alignment of his arms and legs. Gracefully advancing to meet him, he computes all these angles and movements down to the tiny fraction of time. Peeking at a gap in his opponent’s move, he makes a thrust, stretching his arm and hands directly to a point of his enemy’s chest. Bullseye! A millisecond late and he’ll take a hit. This is the world of fencing. This is the world of Tissot, the official timekeeper of the Fencing World Championships.

How to create that distressed look

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Arte Italica (31)

Distressed style in interior design goes back in the nineties when designers would deliberately scratch, scrub or damage new furniture and home décor items to make them appear old and rustic. The overall theme creates a bucolic atmosphere preferred by many urban homeowners who fantasize about living in an idyllic provincial house. The trend took off when Shabby Chic, a TV series that promote the distressed style, came on air, even counting Jennifer Lopez as one of its clients. It’s simple to create this style. Buy hand-me-down items with cold, neutral colors without any shiny parts. Get a steel brush or hammer and enjoy tormenting some sections of the items. But don’t overdo it. Then get some authentic rustic home décor accents like Arte Italica Capri vases and watch your home interior light up with true pastoral feel.

What else can it be but Swiss?

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:30:00 AM in Swiss Army (38)

What can be more Swiss than the Swiss Army knife? At the least, the name is one of the most iconic Swiss brands along with Swiss cheese and the Alps. In fact, Swiss Army now manufactures its line of luxury watches and you guess it, they’re genuine Swiss watches. But what makes a product Swiss in this age of global supply chains? According to Swiss law, a watch can be called Swiss made if its movement is manufactured in Switzerland. Likewise, the watch should be cased up in the country and the final inspection is done in Switzerland. Furthermore, the movement—a conflagration of tiny parts—itself should be assembled and inspected in Switzerland. Likewise, the Swiss manufacture cost should be at least 50% of the total cost. You don’t have to know all these requirements though. When you buy a Swiss Army watch, you know it’s Swiss.

Beauty of memories

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Suna Bros (36)

I dreamed of her last night. Her pretty face smiling at me. Her vulnerable body swaying with the wind as she giggled and we played catch-me-if-you-can. We were at a beach house on our first anniversary. She was all that I cared and wanted. She gleamed in love and her eyes fixated on the idea that life would stay as simple and deliriously happy as that day, while a Suna Bros. pink diamond glistened in the sun. It’s my gift to her for a year of blissful romance. That was twenty five years ago, but in my mind everything is still crystal clear. She passed away three years ago and with her a big part of my life. I still hold those memories and the pink diamond I wear now to keep her close to me until one day I shall see her once more.

Tuscan dreamy morning

Posted by Schiffman's at 8:00:00 AM in Casafina (31)

Remember the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun? Panorama of rolling hills, vineyards that stretch to the horizon, rich culinary delights and that Italian propensity for life. Based on Frances Mayes’ memoir, the film follows Diane Lane’s character, an American divorcee who went to a small Tuscan town to get some breathing space and her bearings. But instead of space and peace she got overwhelmed by the Italian way of life: the complexities of a young couple’s love; the struggles back home of a bunch of Polish immigrant carpenters working on her house; and her own flirtations with Italian men including her married landlord’s secret admiration of her. All these things come to my mind one early morning while preparing breakfast with my Casafina Indigo Collection. It’s Greek inspired, I know, but close enough to make me dream of pepperonis, wines and the simple pleasures and struggled in life.

Emotionally charged

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in Slane (32)

My girlfriend got upset one day when she lost her Slane pendant. She couldn’t remember where she left it; probably she took it off while washing her hands in a public restroom and forgot to replace it. I gave it to her as a birthday gift last year so she must be feeling depressed losing something that reflects my, well, love. I told her it doesn’t matter. She lost a jewelry (I cringed deep inside of course; that Slane cost me bucks), not my love. I felt so cheesy but it was only a way to get her out of the blues. I thought I’d buy her another Slane to make up for the loss. When I got home I got a call from her. She was excited. She found the bracelet in her suit jacket. That’s the "problem" with Slane. People develop an emotional attachment to it.

The Art of flow

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:50 AM in Couzon (32)

There’s a graceful appeal in a Couzon cutlery set. The handles run elegantly without corners. The points are but a bridge onto the next continuous motion. The surface gleams in unblemished texture. The quality stainless steel aside, the luxury tableware set is defined by the art of flow. Flow is a fundamental element in design, but it’s difficult to control even for an experienced artist. It requires a subtle touch, lest one miscue spells a disruption in the whole concept. Unlike with squares and rectangles where the designer can abruptly stop the motion of style in each corner, flow demands one complete uninterrupted stroke. Be it in painting or sculpture, or tableware for Couzon’s matter, flow is the artist’s pet peeve, but once mastered, creates a most astounding rhythm.

A Silver Night

Posted by Schiffman's at 9:00:00 AM in Empire Silver Co (31)

I remember asking over our CEO to a dinner at home once. I was new to the company so I was trying to impress the big boss and I was also trying to build rapport. I thought it’s going to be a smooth run until I realized, what we would talk about in that whole stretch while having dinner. I’m from the marketing department and he’s this finance guy who rose from the ranks with a quiet demeanor and a profound attraction to numbers. He’s exactly my opposite. I love music, art, sports and even entertainment; hence, I’m fond of hosting dinners. The day came and we sat for dinner. After the small pleasantries, I dreaded we ran out of topics that would be mutually interesting. Then he exclaimed, “Oh, you also got an Empire Silver set there.” I knew it would be one interesting night. It was.
