The Mikimoto Commitment

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:00 AM in Mikimoto (45)

It was in 1905 that Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder, produced the first spherical cultured pearl. It was a gem that the world had never laid its eyes on. Pearls have been traditionally a symbol of purity and Mikimoto makes the purest cultured pearls. Each pearl that makes it to a Mikimoto creation has passed through stringent testing. Mikimoto makes it to a point that it only provides you with the best. To prove its commitment to excellence and beauty, Mikimoto staged a burning of inferior pearls in 1932. Kokichi shoveled inferior pearls into a fire in front of the Kobe Chamber of Commerce. The event was flocked to by journalists and it was made famous throughout the world. Mikimoto, the brand and the person, always had the flair for the spectacular. Mikimoto has produced ambitious works of art made with pearls. In 1933, Mikimoto unveiled a model of George Washington’s residence at World’s Fair and a replica of the Liberty Bell in 1939.

Posted by Schiffman's at 5:00:00 AM in Lladro (32)

Although moms are different, these days, as they are more likely to have gone to college, more likely to work full-time, less likely to have more than two children, and less likely to be married than previous generation, still they have that one thing in common with the past generations of mothers – the maternal instinct. Whatever the agonizing or doubts, most mothers tenaciously persist in mothering. From the moment a woman learns she is pregnant, a lifelong bond begins to grow, linking mother and child forever in the strongest possible manifestation of love. The nesting instinct abounds and moms go out and buy all of the books, decorate the nursery, and pick out baby names. It is with this thought that Lladro, beyond doubt one of the most universally recognized Spanish brands, created its newest addition to its 2014 collections, “A New Life” – a 30” x 18 cm, 11 ¾” x 7” sculpture. With this sculpture, the deepest emotions take on all their meaning in the hands of Lladro artists. Hands that give birth to pieces that will share with us the most important moments in the life of a mother.

Sparkling Memories

Posted by Schiffman's at 5:20:45 AM in Mémoire (37)

Our memory is our brain's filing system. It is one of the most important ways by which our histories animate our current actions and experiences. It contains and will contain everything we have and will learn. When times are tough our memories can provide an important reassurance that things will become better at some point.  Although memories can be vivid and long-lasting, they are also susceptible to inaccuracies and forgetting. One may lose a memory created fifteen seconds earlier, such as when you find yourself standing in your kitchen trying to remember what you came there to fetch. And so, some stick, and some may just slip away. This is where Mémoire steps in.  With Mémoire, you can hold your memories in one glance of an eye. Mémoire has been manufacturing diamond jewelry in the United States for more than 20 years. With mountings made in Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy and the United States, Mémoire assures its customers with simply the highest level of quality and manufacturing available today, which in turn assures the buying public of a memory to last a lifetime.

The Luck of the Irish

Posted by Schiffman's at 5:00:10 AM in Michael Aram (36)

A clover is a universally accepted symbol of good luck with its origin ages old. In the early days of Ireland, the Druids believed that they could see evil spirits coming when they carried a shamrock, or three-leaf clover, giving them a chance to get away in time! They thought four-leaf clovers offered magical protection, and warded off bad luck. Even Michael Aram, an American-born artist known for his tableware and furniture both sold in galleries and specialty stores worldwide, find the clover an intriguing tiny plant with its promise of fortune and luck. But to him, they are more delightful to behold when in bunches – hence, the Michael Aram Clover Collection. Michael Aram's interpretation captures the lucky spirit of the clover in a fantastical and playful motif.

Orange Matters

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:00 AM in Orange Howell (32)

With its enthusiasm for life, the color orange relates to adventure and risk-taking, inspiring physical confidence, competition and independence. Orange, the blend of red and yellow, is a mixture of the energy associated with red and the happiness associated with yellow. While red is associated with fiery heat, orange is associated with the benign warmth of the sun. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. Historically, orange is both the name and emblematic color of the royal family. It even stands for the Northern Irish Protestants (in the U.K) and has very strong religious and political significance. Coincidentally, it is also the first name of a company that designs, develops and markets luminous gifts bespoke with American craftsmanship to celebrate homes, holidays, weddings, and love – Orange Howell.

Estate Jewelry Defined

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:00:00 AM in Judith Ripka Essentials (33)

If you love jewelry and fashion but find today's design trends don't inspire your senses, it's time to look at estate jewelry. Estate jewelry is jewelry that has been previously owned, not that it is jewelry that comes from someone’s estate, although generally most estate jewelry does, in fact, come from someone’s estate. Going vintage (or estate, if I may) can give you a lot of great deals since it is a fantastic way to acquire pieces with the lost art of "Old World" craftsmanship; and it is also a wonderful way to acquire platinum-set jewelry. Sometimes we don't notice signs of lead solder repairs, or diamonds that look like snowballs or appearing like gravel, and we end up paying a lot for something that has already lost its value. If you’re somebody who also worries with buying estate jewelry, but would pretty much like to still enjoy the beauty and elegance it would have brought to the wearer, Judith Ripka Essentials is for you. Judith Ripka Essentials creates timeless, classic jewelry with a special, modern twist, which includes an estate-inspired collection.

Glass from Sweden

Posted by Schiffman's at 7:25:00 AM in Orrefors (33)

Glass, more than any other material awakens our imagination. It can change appearance and colour, be strong and fragile, sharp and soft at the same time. Glass can even change a small locality’s future –just like what it did with Orrefors. Orrefors is a locality situated in Nybro Municipality, Kalmar County, Sweden. Now, the locality is known to be the founding place of the internationally acclaimed Orrefors, maker of utility glass and art glass made of crystal since 1898. The place and the glass are so intertwined that if you are in Sweden and you do have the possibility to go to Orrefors, there’s no way you can complete your visit without taking a tour in the glass fabric.
But if in some particular circumstance, you can’t, then worry not, you can still have the timeles Scandinavian elegance by visiting Schiffman’s at Friendly Center – where Orrefor’s new collections of utility glassware produced in large-volume series and limited-edition art glass, are reqularly presented.

The Rock

Posted by Schiffman's at 6:00:00 AM in FireMark Diamonds (35)

For thousands of years, mankind has been besotted by the beauty of the diamond, though diamonds have meant different things to different societies. Until the 15th century, they were seen by leaders as symbols of supreme strength. The name itself comes from the Greek word "adamas," meaning indestructible. The Greeks were a romantic sort, and for them the dancing sparkle of the diamond was the sign of the extinguishable flame of love. Such belief in fact continued today as more and more people buy diamonds not because they like how they glitter, are charming and unique but because they still believe that diamonds have powers that influence a person's life thus bringing happiness, prosperity and peace into a person's life – not to mention the implied recognition of one’s position in society.
But to be assured of superior cut and quality, there’s no other diamond that could be as perfect as the FireMark Diamonds, the world’s foremost diamond authority. Come see it yourself at Schiffman’s at Winston-Salem.

More than Just Material Remains

Posted by Schiffman's at 6:00:00 AM in Reed & Barton Silversmiths (32)

The past is all around us. Almost every society that has developed over the past 4,000 years has made an attempt to preserve its history in some form or another. But the historic environment is more than just a matter of material remains – for heritage is important mainly because the spirit and direction of the nation are founded upon and reflected on those that cannot be touched.  It is in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the religions we follow, and the skills we learn. Some of us may not have money or property to give to our children when we die, but we can give a rich heritage to them. We can offer a heritage that will enhance their lives in every good way that we desire for them. That is why at Reed & Barton Silversmiths, heritage is not only what we touch and see, but most of the time it is intangible, felt and continued by amazing memories and treasures that are preserved in exquisite varieties of silver.
Come see the spirit of heritage come to life at Schiffman’s at Downtown Greensboro.

The Pearce Shape

Posted by Schiffman's at 5:00:00 AM in Simon Pearce (32)

There are truly an endless variety of shapes and combination of shapes, each communicating its own meaning and message. Sometimes, there are a variety of meanings that are more commonly ascribed to these shapes, particular when used in a religious or magical context. Much the same way that lines have meaning, shapes have meaning and are an important building block in the visual grammar and visual thinking especially to artists. Geometric shapes, specifically, usually suggest organization and efficiency. It suggests structure. Geometric shapes tend to be symmetrical further suggesting order. One particular artist, Simon Pearce, well-known for his glass pieces, has blended nature’s most basic elements and his definite acclaimed glass forms and functions, with the simple shapes of 1920’s Bauhaus design: circles, triangles, squares, to create his latest collection, the Geo. Geo is Simon Pearce’s newest design made especially for those who love to mix and match modern pieces with treasured heirlooms.
